Free Behind Bars

One of the biggest, silent crisis in Malawi is the rise of young, juvenile prisoners that end up in adult prisons due to lack of age-specific facilities. This is in part because the Malawian government’s budget is overwhelmed by other more pressing line items to tackle issues of hunger, disease, poverty and other social injustices. That being the case, it is almost impossible to create separate programs that take care of young people that break the law.
While we believe in the provision of justice to people for the crimes they commit, we also believe in the value of helping young people develop a pattern of making rational decisions.
Free Behind Bars is a program under The Chisomo Idea’s Leadership Development Project.
This is where our Free Behind Bars program comes in.
What is Free Behind Bars?
Free behind bars is a program that inspires young African college students to make an impact in the lives of young prisoners by donating their time to provide leadership skills and practical training that helps the prisoners become better citizens during and after the sentences.
Target Group:
Teenage prisoners in Malawi prisons.
Why Free Behind Bars?
- Because most youth that end up in prison at a young age return to prison after their release.
- Because prisons were not only originated to punish but also to provide people with an opportunity to think their lives over.
- Because true freedom is not determined by physical boundaries
- Because prisoners are eager to learn
- Because young prisoners have the greatest potential of impacting others with their stories after their release.
- Because every human being deserves a chance at life.
- Because CRIMINAL is not their identity
The Chisomo Idea believes in the sustainability of Free Behind Bars because it is a volunteer program that gives young college students a sense of purpose in the pursuit of their education.
