Often times very little value can be placed on the transformative work of investing in young girls in under-resourced communities around the world. In some African communities, this might be due to long standing histories of prioritizing the development of boys, especially when it comes to education. It is however a proven fact that when you invest in and develop girls, the benefits of the development are felt throughout the community. This is why at Chisomo Idea we have made it part of our life’s work to make sure that the voices of the girls in the communities that we work in are both heard and respected.
One of the ways in which we are doing this is by creating workshops that function as “Think Tanks” to allow girls to express themselves. Our recent workshop in the community of Luwinga in Northern Malawi, was attended by 50 brilliant young women and it served as an opportunity for them to be encouraged in their pursuit of education and service in their homes and community. The workshop was an extension of the Illumination Conference that was held in Malawi in 2015 by a group of young leaders from Malawi and the United States.
Here are some of the ways in which the girls were impacted:
“I learned that how I think and what I do matters. This has inspired me to seek change in my life.” – Alinafe
“I was reminded to care for my body because my body is the temple of God. I also liked the devotional book that I received.” – Maria
“I need to attend more meetings like these so I can be well behaved and focus more in school.” – Caroline
“I was inspired to change my life and have more respect for others, especially my parents because of what Pastor Monica shared.” – Rosemary.
We invite you to come alongside us to make a difference in the lives of girls like Alinafe, Maria, Caroline, and Rosemary. Do not underestimate the power of your voice in this pursuit.
Thank you. God bless you.
