Last year we asked a few of our friends to help us raise money to buy land for our GRASSROOTS SOCCER AND LIFE ECONOMICS ACADEMY in Chinsapo, Malawi, Africa.  In a moment of unparalleled generosity, our friends mostly college students and young adults, helped us beat our goal.  The money was used to not only buy land but also a van to help in the day to day running of our programs.

This year, we want to literally build upon the good work that is already started by building a multi-purpose community center, a staff duplex, and finally set up fields for the academy to accommodate the boys and girls that we are training and mentoring in the program.

THE TWO-PRONGED 60/60 PLAN::

The First 60, Make a Brick [If you are in Malawi]
On June 2nd 2012 we are challenging all of our friends in Malawi to spend the day in Chinsapo in partnership with our athletes to make bricks for the academy.  We have estimated the total amount of bricks needed for this phase of the project to be 60,000.  We have designated this day as the start day for pursuing that goal because we believe that some change can and should be ushered in by hand.

The Second 60, Buy a Brick [If you are not in Malawi]
We know that a lot of you will be inspired by this project but you cannot be in Malawi to make bricks so we have created a different challenge for you– an invitation to buy a brick at a $1 each.

This phase of the project is projected to cost $60,000 and by pledging to buy the bricks made, you can help us meet that second 60 goal.  Our desire is to meet that goal by Christmas of 2012.

Please invite your friends, family, co-workers, teammates, youth groups, churches, etc. to commit to a number of bricks that you want to buy and help us raise the money.

We have always looked at our movement as a crush created by the beautiful collision of the western and eastern cultures.  The crush is racial, it is ethnic, it is tribal, and it is social economic…This campaign will introduce us to its effect.  It will give us a chance to take a step out of cynicism and apathy and declare that the world possesses enough for everyone’s need.   It will allow us to declare through action that the world possesses enough imagination, creativity, and resources to allow all humanity to thrive.  It will give us an opportunity to chose HOPE, RESILIENCE, AND FAIRNESS over a CULTURE OF SCARCITY AND FEAR…

THREE: USE YOUR FINANCES
We live in a culture that looks at life from a perspective of scarcity which makes it hard for us to realize that we can make a contribution in other people’s lives.  Try to live a committed life of financial giving and see what would happen.

THE CHISOMO IDEA PRESENTS:  Entrepreneur of The Month
The Chisomo Idea story has always been a simple narrative of ordinary restless creatives that chose to use their gifts to serve others.  In the month of October, we want to put the effectiveness of that mindset to the test.

How it Works:  On October 1st, 10 volunteers will receive $100 each from The Chisomo Idea with the goal of turning it to more than $100 by October 31st.  The most creative story will be featured on the Chisomo website at the end of the month

The Purpose of The Initiative:  To help 10 Malawian young athletes return to school for the entire year through the Chisomo Idea Academy’s SCHOLAR ATHLETE PROGRAM.

The Art of “Follower-ship”

It is very interesting that so much has been said about leadership and very little about “follower-ship” despite the fact that many of us spend much of our time following that leading.  I think this may be due to the fact that we all gravitate towards being a head.  I often wonder, especially lately, what the world would look like if we developed better followers.  I wonder what would happen in my own life if I was not obsessed with my vision but paid attention to a picture bigger than what my myopic sight can take in.  Would I care more about the poor and their communities?  Would my relationship with my wife be better for it?  Would following well make me a better leader?

Whatever the answer to those questions may be, I would like to argue that following well is more fascinating than leading.
